EU resolution condemning the use of armed drones

On Thursday 27 February, the EU Parliament passed a resolution condemning the use of combat drones. This should cause debate on drone warfare in the Storting.

The resolution was passed with an overwhelming majority and can be found in its entirety here

In Norway, drone warfare has not been discussed in the Storting, and the government has not formulated a Norwegian policy regarding the ongoing drone wars in Pakistan and Yemen. Fredslaget considers the lack of debate and public statements as irresponsible as well as unworthy with regards to victims of drone war.

As the drone war in Pakistan and Yemen is conducted by Norway's close ally USA, it is understandable that it is uncomfortable to bring the topic up for political discussion in Norway. But when innocents are killed and maimed by combat drones in Pakistan, Yemen and Palestine, silence is not an option.

The Norwegian drone industry profits from drone war - and the politicians remain quiet. It is high time that the drone war and its links to the Norwegian defense industry is properly discussed in the Storting.
